Interesting developement in the Wiley-WMC feud

September 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

The response by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce to former Chancellor Wiley’s criticism of the organization has led to an interesting legal challenge by One Wisconsin Now:

One Wisconsin Now filed a complaint Tuesday with the state Government Accountability Board alleging that Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce didn’t disclose lobbying activity a WMC official referred to in an Aug. [...]

Beer Pong at Walgreens

September 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

It was first reported on by the Daily Cardinal last Friday and the BH picked up the story yesterday. Now that I’m back from being letdown by the football team in Ann Arbor, I have a couple of thoughts on the grouping of red plastic cups and ping pong balls at the U-Square Walgreen’s.
The line [...]

More than just funding

September 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Most of the coverage of yesterday’s story about the Wisconsin Taxpayer’s Alliance concerning state funding for the UW System over the past 25 years has been focused on the monetary statistics and rankings in the report. See the Wisconsin Lounge post or the Badger Herald story for examples. One very important aspect of the report [...]

If you thought the UW state funding situation looked bad before, wait till you see this

September 24th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

A host of new comparisons to changes in the UW-System budget really put the UW funding situation in perspective. From the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance:
With University leaders and state politicians trading charges recently, a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) examines state [...]

Why doesn’t the UW do a better job of promoting itself?

September 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

On my last post, commenter Bucky Joe brings up a very interesting question:
But why isn’t the University out there, shouting this story from the rooftops?! I’m shocked that this hasn’t hit the news yet, or even a simple news release from campus.
The Critical Badger is apparently also intrigued by the discussion.
Inspired to look a [...]

New research expenditure numbers are in

September 16th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

from the National Science Foundation. There are a couple of things that are worth noting
1. Adjusted for inflation, total federal support for research has declined by 1.6%. That means that the competition for grants and for the faculty members that bring them in is only going to get more competative. Every faculty member that we [...]

The Oliver Delgado situation

September 15th, 2008 · 11 Comments · Uncategorized

Now that the CB and I have officially released “The Oliver Delgado Time to Action Timer“, I have a thought or two on the situation.
No one (including Delgado himself) seems to be able to come up with a reason that he shouldn’t resign. There are only those who argue that the situation isn’t worth our [...]

When will people realize how low BH LTE standards are?

September 9th, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

In light of the 3 letters to the editor in today’s Badger Herald about how “appalled” they were that the Monday’s edition of the BH would choose to publish such incorrect letters to the editor, I found myself wondering how students who followed and cared enough about the student papers to read and write responsive [...]

No article on a UW issue involving the state legislature could be complete without a Nass or Mikalsen quote

September 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

And today’s BH story on US Rep. Tammy Baldwin and other Democrats speaking to the TAA proves to be no exception.
However, according to Mike Mikalsen, spokesperson for state Rep. Steve Nass, R-Whitewater, the TAA’s efforts will go unanswered unless the university is willing to break state law, which currently prohibits domestic partner benefits.
“It’s unfortunate that [...]
